    On the Profiles and Polarization of Raman Scattered Emission Lines in Symbiotic Stars:II. Numerical Simulations

    A Monte Carlo method is used to calculate the profiles and the polarization of the Raman scattered O VI lines(lambda lambda 6827,7088) in symbiotic stars. A point-like isotropic UV radiation source is assumed and a simple spherical wind model is adopted for the kinematics of the scattering material from the cool giant. We first investigate the case where the incident line photons are described by a Gaussian profile having a width of 10^4 K. We subsequently investigate the effects of the extended ionized region and non-spherical wind models including a disk-type wind and a bipolar wind. The cases where the emissin source is described by non-Gaussian profiles are briefly studied. Finally, as an additional component for the kinematics of symbiotic stars the orbital motion of the hot component around the cool giant is included and the effect on the spectropolarimetry is investigated. In this case the polarization direction changes around the red part of the Raman-scattered emission lines, when the observer's line of sight is perpendicular to the orbital plane, and no such effect is seen when the line of sight lies in the orbital plane. Furthermore, complex peak structures are seen in the degree of polarization and polarized flux, which have often been observed in several symbiotic systems including RR Tel. Brief observational consequences and preditions are discussed in relation to the present and future spectropolarimetry for symbiotic stars. It is concluded that spectropolarimetry may provide a powerful diagnostic of the physical conditions of symbiotic stars.Comment: 22 pages, Tex, 15 postscript figuer

    The title compound, C26H18N4O5, can be regarded as an extended ether with two terminal nitro groups. The two aryl rings bonded to the central O atom form a dihedral angle of 75.72 (6)°, and the terminal nitro groups are slightly twisted [by 6.4 (2) and 3.3 (3)°] from the benzene rings to which they are attached. The crystal packing exhibits weak inter­molecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π–π inter­actions [centroid–centroid distances = 3.794 (3) Å]

    C57BL/6 life span study: age-related declines in muscle power production and contractile velocity

    Quantification of key outcome measures in animal models of aging is an important step preceding intervention testing. One such measurement, skeletal muscle power generation (force * velocity), is critical for dynamic movement. Prior research focused on maximum power (P max), which occurs around 30-40 % of maximum load. However, movement occurs over the entire load range. Thus, the primary purpose of this study was to determine the effect of age on power generation during concentric contractions in the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus muscles over the load range from 10 to 90 % of peak isometric tetanic force (P 0). Adult, old, and elderly male C57BL/6 mice were examined for contractile function (6-7 months old, 100 % survival; ~24 months, 75 %; and ~28 months, 50 % P 0). The shape of the force-velocity curve also changed with age (a/P 0 increased). In addition, there were prolonged contraction times to maximum force and shifts in the distribution of the myosin light and heavy chain isoforms in the EDL.     China is the fastest growing Internet economy in Asia/Pacific, with Chinese Internet users forecasted to account for approximately half of all Internet usage in the region by the end of 2005. Chinese companies are also proving to be the largest investors of Internet infrastructure equipment as they turn to the Internet to increase business and information flow. As the Internet permeates all corners of the globe, small to medium-sized businesses may be pondering the move to a multilingual ecommerce website to increase their reach, and may be enticed by the potentially huge Chinese market. While a larger corporation can make the transition to a multilingual site with relative ease, small to medium enterprises (SMEs) must be concerned about the cost and effort involved, as well as how to go about the actual translation process and handle complications. China’s accession into the World Trade Organization (WTO) has opened up many opportunities, especially to expand their operations in the outside world, and has also changed it from a minor trading country to one of the world’s major trading countries. Some companies are already starting to take advantage of these opportunities, making now the key time to get a foothold in the market before everyone else makes their claim. The countries as a whole and its individual companies begin to face a range of issues that will have a direct impact on the course of the country’s further development.     Bilateral herpetic keratitis presenting with unilateral neurotrophic keratitis in pemphigus foliaceus: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>We report a case of bilateral herpetic keratitis developing after rapid oral corticosteroid tapering in a patient with pemphigus foliaceus, which was followed by unilateral neurotrophic keratitis that was treated with amniotic membrane transplantation.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 71-year-old Korean man developed bilateral herpetic keratitis one week after rapid tapering of systemic corticosteroid. He had been on high-dose oral corticosteroid and azathioprine therapy for six months for treatment of pemphigus foliaceus. Topical acyclovir ointment was prescribed. A week later, our patient's right eye had healed, but his left eye showed increased stromal edema with enlarged epithelial defects. He was prescribed oral acyclovir with topical broad-spectrum antibiotics applied to his left eye. The stromal edema cleared within a week but the epithelial defect remained unchanged. An amniotic membrane transplantation was performed on our patient's left eye, and his epithelial defect had totally healed three weeks later.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Patients with autoimmune disease or who are on immunosuppressive therapy have a higher chance of developing bilateral herpetic keratitis. Although rare, the condition may be followed by unilateral neurotrophic keratitis. Rapid corticosteroid tapering may act as a triggering factor for viral infection or reactivation of herpes.</p

    Electronic structure of YbB6_{6}: Is it a Topological Insulator or not?

    To resolve the controversial issue of the topological nature of the electronic structure of YbB6_{6}, we have made a combined study using density functional theory (DFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Accurate determination of the low energy band topology in DFT requires the use of modified Becke-Johnson exchange potential incorporating the spin-orbit coupling and the on-site Coulomb interaction UU of Yb 4f4f electrons as large as 7 eV. We have double-checked the DFT result with the more precise GW band calculation. ARPES is done with the non-polar (110) surface termination to avoid band bending and quantum well confinement that have confused ARPES spectra taken on the polar (001) surface termination. Thereby we show definitively that YbB6_{6} has a topologically trivial B 2pp-Yb 5dd semiconductor band gap, and hence is a non-Kondo non-topological insulator (TI). In agreement with theory, ARPES shows pure divalency for Yb and a pp-dd band gap of 0.3 eV, which clearly rules out both of the previous scenarios of ff-dd band inversion Kondo TI and pp-dd band inversion non-Kondo TI. We have also examined the pressure-dependent electronic structure of YbB6_{6}, and found that the high pressure phase is not a Kondo TI but a \emph{p}-\emph{d} overlap semimetal.Comment: The main text is 6 pages with 4 figures, and the supplementary information contains 6 figures. 11 pages, 10 figures in total To be appeared in Phys.     Enhancing workflow-nets with data for trace completion

    The growing adoption of IT-systems for modeling and executing (business) processes or services has thrust the scientific investigation towards techniques and tools which support more complex forms of process analysis. Many of them, such as conformance checking, process alignment, mining and enhancement, rely on complete observation of past (tracked and logged) executions. In many real cases, however, the lack of human or IT-support on all the steps of process execution, as well as information hiding and abstraction of model and data, result in incomplete log information of both data and activities. This paper tackles the issue of automatically repairing traces with missing information by notably considering not only activities but also data manipulated by them. Our technique recasts such a problem in a reachability problem and provides an encoding in an action language which allows to virtually use any state-of-the-art planning to return solutions

    Evaluation of combinatorial cis-regulatory elements for stable gene expression in chicken cells

However it is not likely that target protein is produced as kinetically expected because various factors affect target gene expression. Although there have been various attempts to minimize the silencing of transgenes, a generalized study that uses multiple cis-acting elements in chicken has not been made. The aim of the present study was to analyze whether various cis-acting elements can help to sustain transgene expression in chicken fibroblasts. Results: We investigated the optimal transcriptional regulatory elements for enhancing stable transgene expression in chicken cells. We generated eight constructs that encode enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) driven by either CMV or CAG promoters (including the control), containing three types of key regulatory elements: a chicken lysozyme matrix attachment region (cMAR), 5′-DNase I-hypersensitive sites 4 (cHS4), and the woodchuck hepatitis virus posttranscriptional regulatory element (WPRE). Then we transformed immortalized chicken embryonic fibroblasts with these constructs by electroporation, and after cells were expanded under G418 selection, analyzed mRNA levels and mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) by quantitative real-time PCR and flow cytometry, respectively. We found that the copy number of each construct significantly decreased as the size of the construct increased (R2 = 0.701). A significant model effect was found in the expression level among various constructs in both mRNA and protein (P < 0.0001). Transcription with the CAG promoter was 1.6-fold higher than the CMV promoter (P = 0.027) and the level of eGFP expression activity in cMAR- or cHS4-flanked constructs increased by two- to three-fold compared to the control CMV or CAG promoter constructs. In addition, flow cytometry analysis showed that constructs having cis-acting elements decreased the level of gene silencing as well as the coefficient of variance of eGFP-expressing cells (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: Our current data show that an optimal combination of cis-acting elements and promoters/enhancers for sustaining gene expression in chicken cells is suggested.
